US and Canadian Governments: Stop Intervention in support of Tahoe Resources

Last year, 40 human rights and environmental justice organizations in wrote the US and Canadian embassies, demanding they stand up for human rights defenders exercising their right to peaceful protest against Tahoe Resources' Escobal silver mine. We also urged them to stay out of the legal battle that is currently being decided by the Guatemalan Constitutional Court over the indigenous Xinca communities' right to consultation in the Escobal mine case. We need to push them again and hold them accountable for their intervention in the Guatemalan judicial system!
Tahoe Resources has been lobbying the US and Canadian governments for months and it is starting to pay off. Last week, the US embassy took a stand, issuing a public statement, highlighted the importance of a "stable investment climate" to be able to exploitation natural resources for economic development in Guatemala. In this context, they urged the Constitutional Court to make expeditious decision, but made no mention of the importance of community processes for self-determination. We think that this is reprehensible.
Please join us and the Coalition Against Unjust Mining in Guatemala (CAMIGUA) in telling the US that this is unacceptable and demanding they retract the statement by signing the letter to US ambassador, Luis Arreaga and Canadian ambassador, Deborah Chatsis.

El año pasado, 40 organizaciones de derechos humanos y justicia ambiental escribieron en las embajadas de Estados Unidos y Canadá, exigiendo que defiendan a los defensores y defensoras de los derechos humanos que ejercen su derecho a la manifestación pacíficamente contra la mina de plata El Escobal de Tahoe Resources. También les pedimos que se mantuvieran fuera de la batalla legal que actualmente está siendo decidida por La Corte de Constitucionalidad de Guatemala acerca del derecho a la consulta del pueblo Xinca el caso de la mina Escobal.¡Tenemos que presionarlos nuevamente y hacerlos responsables de su intervención en el sistema judicial guatemalteco!
